Posted by bishopslodgemgr in Adventures

5 of the Best and Nearest Day Hikes to Bishop’s Lodge:

  1. Dale Ball Trails makes the list because it is great for beginners and advanced hikers and offers great views of wilderness as well as views of the city. A unique sign system provides easy navigation and the trails are divided up into Dale Balls Trail Central, a 6 mile trail that is moderately challenging with some short, steep climbs and Dale Balls Trail North, an easier and shorter distance hike that is less than 4 miles long. Dog friendly and good for bikes too, this trail hits all the right notes for being right outside the Bishop’s Lodge doorstep.

  1. Dorothy Stewart Trail is next on the list for being a perfect and quick little jaunt that is great for visitors and not too rigorous. Hikes are rewarded with spectacular views of Santa Fe throughout the track without getting to deep into steep and narrow trails. This trail has great access to the Dale Ball trails and is an ideal afternoon hike to catch the sunset on the way home.

  1. Atalaya Mountain includes a 7mile loop and 4.6 mile trail. Degree of difficulty is easy at first to increasingly difficult. One of the most popular and easily accessible hiking trails in Santa Fe. Both trails join and take you toward the top of Atalaya Mountain, a 9,121-foot peak. At the top are views of Rio Grande valley and the city below. Pack good hiking shoes and this hike with reward you with views after a steeper climb than the other trails on this list.

  1. Hyde Park Circle is 3.91 miles trail that gains over 800 feet, but makes up for it in views. Hyde Park Circle is a favorite for hikers who just want to get up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for a relaxing picnic in nature.

  1. Tesuque Creek Trail: Another great trail that is more moderate and better for shorter hikes. Tesuque Creek Trail is a 3 mile; mostly flat loop right off Bishop’s Lodge Road. The hike is mostly shady and is great for dogs. Over 100 dogs visit this trail a day!

So there you have it fellow Southwest traveler, a condensed list of some of the best and nearest hikes to our resort. Prepare to pack your day packs, hiking shoes and four-legged pals because many of the trails are dog friendly. Come and enjoy the breathtaking views and be sure to share pictures of your hiking adventures on our Facebook Page! After your hike enjoy a special offer from Bishop’s Lodge for a Bed & Breakfast Package!

Tequila 101: A Guide to Flights & Tasting

By: Jordan Barnes, Social Media Specialist for Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa

This winter, Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa is bringing a taste of Mexico to New Mexico by introducing tequila flights to our Las Fuentes bar menu! In preparation for our flight “takeoff”, the Las Fuentes staff has learned a lot about tequila. In this blog post, you’ll learn our tequila takeaways.

Where does tequila come from?

Tequila barrels 2

Tequila Barrels (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Tequila is distilled from blue Weber agave. Mexico’s volcanic soil makes it the ideal terrain for growing this agave, which is why most tequila is distilled in Mexico.

Should there be a worm in my tequila?

Never. This was actually a marketing gimmick devised in the 1940’s, and still somehow exists today. If you see a worm, you’re probably drinking mescal, a product often confused for tequila.

What are the different types of tequila?

There are four main types of tequila, all distinguished by age.

1.)  Blanco (also called silver, plata, or platinum) is the original tequila. It is bottled directly after distillation and is clear in color.

2.)  Reposado, or “rested,” is usually aged between two and twelve months in wooden barrels. The flavor and color of the tequila depends upon the type of wood the tequila is aged in.

3.)  Anejo, meaning “vintage” is aged between one and three years in oak barrels. With a darker color, smoother flavor, and more complex taste than reposado, anejo tequilas are sipping tequilas, best served neat rather than with salt and lime.

4.)  Extra-Anejo is ultra-aged Anejo, aged for more than three years in oak casks. This tequila commands higher prices, which makes it the perfect spirit for special occasions.

What are horizontal and vertical flights?

A horizontal flight is a group of three to five tequilas in the same age category from different distilleries.

A vertical flight is a group of three to five tequilas generally from the same distillery, that are of different categories. Tasters typically have an easier time discerning differences in taste in vertical flights than in horizontal flights.

Meet the Horses – Buster

Posted by bishopslodgemgr in On the Trail, Our Horses

Hi, I’m Buster! I’m 20 years old and I’m a Belgian-Draft Gelding (Gelding means I’m a boy). They say I’m Sorrel in color, but “sorrel” is just a fancy word for “chestnut.” Despite my large size, I like to take my time on the trails. I’m a pretty mellow so if you’re a beginner, I may be the horse for you! I’m also blind in my left eye, but it doesn’t affect my performance, it just makes me unique.  If you’re heading to my home, Bishop’s Lodge, hope to meet you soon!

Fun Fact: Buster’s favorite song is Tennessee Stud by Johnny Cash

Tips for Planning a Fairytale Fall Wedding

Posted by bishopslodgemgr in Happenings

Fall is a fabulous seasons for weddings. Not too hot nor too cold, guests are able to enjoy the gorgeous backdrop fall foliage provides and you don’t have to worry they’ll be out of town on vacation. No wonder September is the most popular month for weddings, with 14% of all annual weddings taking place this month.

Below, you’ll find our top tips for planning autumn nuptials.

Think Outside the Box

While it may be a natural instinct to stick with seasonal staples such as pumpkins and pinecones, we recommend thinking outside the box. Try using less conventional decorations such as cranberries, acorns, and dried wheat.

For a contemporary look, fill rectangular vases with water and add bobbing cranberries and floating tea-light candles.

Color is Key

When choosing a palette, consider fall hues like burgundy, copper, eggplant, forest green or brown. But avoid mixing too many of these seasonal classics, as it may relay a more youthful vibe than you’d like. For your tables, rather than pairing multiple colors, play with different textures instead. Velvet and heavy satin table cloths give off a more formal feel, while knit or crochet will work for a casual, rustic reception.

Taste the Season

When you think of fall, we all have a seasonal food favorite that comes to mind. Don’t be afraid to treat your guests to familiar flavors like pumpkin pie, apple turnovers or persimmon.

You might even go so far as to extend this theme to the cocktails. Nothing says autumn like a great apple cider.

For more tips and tricks for fall or any season of the year, contact our Event Director Kristina Kohl by phone at 505-819-4006 or by email at kkohl@bishopslodge.com
